Octoberrrrrr!

Hi Everyone,
We had a great week of learning! I feel very lucky to have such a great group of students!  They are motivated learners and just an all-around blast to be around.  They are learning quite a bit as things ramp up and we are still having fun too.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
I am still hoping to meet with parents for conferences so if you haven't signed up yet for the times available, please do so ASAP.  I am eager to hear your thoughts and have an open dialogue about your child's learning. I will be holding one session in the evening and this will be the common parent-teacher conference night for Burns Park.  I will also hold some during the school day.  If you can make those times, please sign up.  If you absolutely can't make those times, I will offer you a session to meet with me at Argus Farm Stop on Packard Rd. or at school during the day.  Thank you for understanding and your support.

Writing
Students are really generating some great ideas for the personal narrative writing unit.  We listed or webbed ideas strong feelings. Students brainstormed ideas for six strong feelings and created a list of web about them.  Students also recorded their first time, last time, or a time they realized something in a list or web.  They also made a timeline to plan, sequence, and revise a story.  Students are doing a fantastic job and I love learning about their experiences.

Halloween Party!
To celebrate all the hard work students have done so far, I will be hosting a Halloween celebration on Thursday, October 31.  You are welcome to join us!  More details to follow! The day of Halloween parents may join their child from 12:30-1:00 p.m. to help them put their costumes on.  We will then have our party from 1:00-3:00 p.m. with a recess break outside weather permitting.  A HUGE thank you to Jenn-Monk Reising for planning this amazing celebration.  It is going to be ghoulishly grand!  MUAHAHAHA!

Data Binders
Showing student growth has become an important aspect of teaching. We have created a place for students to collect work and tests done in class. They will analyze these items and track their data. Students will also set goals for themselves each week to master the learning objectives for the year.  These Data Binders will be used to help track student growth.  Students will bring these home next week so you can see their Unit 1 test.  I ask that these please come back the next day!   I also use these Data Binders to help track progress.

Reading
One of the goals students need to work on this year is distinguishing between non-fiction and fiction texts.  Please support students reading every night for about 20-30 minutes.  It would be great to ask questions about their reading. I will share some great ideas with you at conferences.  Also, check out the "Curriculum & Student Resources." There are lots of fantastic reading sites great for students in fourth grade.  There are other great sites for all of your children to explore.  Students can also get onto Clever to access Learning A to Z that has great resources, books, and quizzes to test their learning.

Fall Season Has Arrived!
As the weather gets colder, please encourage your child to dress for recess appropriately. They should come with a warm jacket to go outside.  Even though we all love sweatshirts, jackets are preferable. Please also send in mittens/gloves and hats as well for those extra cold days (did I just write that?!).

Just for future reference: When it starts to snow, boots will be expected to be worn for the outside recess times. Boots will NOT be encouraged in the classroom due to wet puddles and slippery floors.  Please help remind students to bring dry shoes for the classroom.  If you could please send in a pair of dry shoes to change into and keep at school, that would deeply be appreciated. And don't forget to send in gym shoes for P.E. on Mondays and Tuesdays. Thanks!

Have a fantastic weekend!
