March Madness

Hi Everyone,
We have had a busy week.  Students will be taking the Unit 6 Math Assessment next week.  I am finished assessing students with reading and they are fully engaged in their fairy tale unit with Ms. Rubin.  We started reading Escaping the Giant Wave that was given to us for March is Reading Month for our Choose Your Own Adventure book.  Students are really enjoying it!

Weather
The weather is warming up a bit but we still have a fluctuation in weather.  As I sit here writing this, I am looking out the classroom window and I see that it is snowing.  I generally follow this rule of thumb, If it is 50 degrees or more, students have the option to wear a coat, but if it is less than 50 degrees, please send them to school with appropriate outdoor wear for recess.  They also need a clean pair of shoes to change into as it gets VERY muddy.  Thanks!

Writing
Students have been busy working on writing their rough drafts for their research papers.  They will be working on this for the next week.  A self-check, buddy check, and parent check will follow.

SICKNESS!
We have many uninformed students and families discussing sickness.  Several schools are reporting an increase in absences due to the flu and other illnesses.  We have had many students from our class alone that have been sick in the last months.  These are recommendations from the district.
  • Please keep your child home when sick to prevent the spreading of germs.
  • Please keep your child home until s/he's been fever-free for 24 hours without medication.
  • Please show your child how to wash hands and to remind them to frequently wash their hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
  • Please encourage your child to have good hand hygiene at school by paying particular attention to washing/sanitizing after going to the bathroom, before eating, and any time they blow their nose.  Remind them to avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. These are preferred routes for germs.
  • Showing them how to cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze is helpful.  They should wash or sanitize their hands immediately after.
Thank you for your support!

A2Virtual+ Online Informational Night
On March 17, learn more about how online classes can personalize your child’s learning path. A2Virtual+ offers courses for students in grades 6-12. They will be discussing what courses are available during the 2020 summer term as well as their program for the 2020-2021 school year. The information meeting will be held in the Skyline Auditorium from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.

Market Day
Market Day is where students create products or provide a service to sell to other students at Burns Park for “Market Day Money.” The students are able to work independently or collaboratively with a partner to create their products. Students will decide on the name of their business as well as the pricing of their product or service.

Some rules and guidelines to follow please:

  1. Please do not use food for products
  2. Students will not be using real money to purchase products
  3. $10 max per person for resources ($20 per partnership)
Market Day will take place on Monday, April 6 in the afternoon.  This was the only date available in the spring to host this.  We are very excited to see what the students come up with!

Spring Testing Dates
Students will be taking the NWEA assessments and the M-STEP starting in April.  Please see the dates below.  They will also be listed on the homework calendar. Students will have the opportunity to practice some of the specific sample test items in class.  If you would like your child to continue exploring the sample test items, please refer to the link below.  This is a great opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with the tools and experience the test format. There is no answer key. Students will be taking a Math Assessment, English Language Arts Assessment, Science Assessment, and a Social Studies assessment.
Students are encouraged to explore the Spring 2020 Preview and the Sample Item Sets. If you click on Sample Item Sets, please select grade 5. The username and password are provided right on that screen to log in. After logging in, students can practice either sample items or sample performance tasks.

** Please make sure that your child is well-rested and has had a good breakfast during this window.  Please also try to avoid scheduling vacations during this time.  If you need to schedule appointments, please try to do so around these days as it will help to ensure that your child can take the test with our class.

In response, AAPS has moved the send home date from March 13th to March 20th.
