Leaves are a changing!

Hi Everyone,
We had a great week!  Reading groups are going well and students are writing more details from the lessons in their personal narrative study.  Rotations are also going well and there are so many great experiences students get to participate in.  Students with their first-grade buddies helped harvest kale, chard, and tomatoes for our farm to school tasting on Monday too. Lastly, we got to see amazing Mexican Dancers and their beautiful costumes from the Morelense Center for the Arts from Morelos, Mexico today for an assembly!

Math
We are working on multiple multiplication strategies for solving multidigit multiplication problems. Some students do not have their multiplication tables down and need to practice. Since we are doing higher-level multiplication and will move into division soon it is imperative that students practice.  It is very important that your child is practicing daily if they don't know their math facts.  I will be testing students on Monday morning to see if they have quick recall and if they know their facts.  I will share at conferences if your child needs extra practice.  If they do, on Clever they can practice XtraMath every day to build skills for a few minutes a day!  It tracks the progress of students.  They can also practice with worksheets or online games.  At the bottom of this post there are videos for your child to view to help them with different strategies for multiplication.

Kleenex Needed!
We have run out of Kleenex!  Help!  The cold and flu are going around so please remind your child to wash hands frequently and remember to wash hands before and after meals.  Michigan Visiting Care will be holding on-site flu shot clinics for staff and family members throughout the District over the next several weeks.

Why should you attend an on-site flu shot clinic?

·      It’s conveniently located so you don’t have to go out of your way to get your flu shot

·      According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the best way to prevent influenza is to receive a seasonal flu shot

·      Washtenaw County Health Department has reported current flu activity in our area

There will be one on 10/24/19 at 4:00-7:00 p.m. in the Burns Park Staff Lounge (Ages 4 and up)

Halloween Party and Parade - Change in Plan
Dear Sensational Shah Classroom Parents!

We hope this finds you well! As you know 'tis the season for thrills and chills and classroom Halloween parties! This year we will be having a MAD SCIENTIST party! We are in need of several of you fantastic parents to help us out to make this the best and last (sign) Halloween party of our kiddos elementary school years! Please take a moment and use the SUG https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090945a9ac2ea3fe3-msshahs and help out where and how best you can. We are asking that if you can make it to the party that you sign up to help out so we can make this a successful event!

One small change - due to all of our Mad Scientists needing to have claws, limbs. and fins free to do each of the experiments safely we will not be having the kiddos change into costumes for the parade until after the party. Sorry if this change inconveniences anyone's schedule. Costume helpers are needed from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

If you have any question please email Jenn Monk-Reising at jmonkreising@gmail.com.

And Happy Haunting!

Jenn, Anu, & Amy
Your Frightfully Fun Shah Room Parents!

Also, there will be a costume swapping and “shopping” on 10/24, 10/25, and 10/31, as well as an opportunity for students to participate in an alternative activity for those not joining the parade or celebrating Halloween on 10/31. Please let me know if you want your child to shop for a costume or to participate in an alternate activity.  This is a friendly ghost reminder that costumes at school need to be friendly in nature, and should not include weapons of any kind.  Costumes are intended to be emotionally supportive for our youngest Penguins.  Thank you for your support!

Fall A2Virtual + Parent-Teacher Conferences
On October 29, 2019,  there will be Parent-Teacher Conferences from 4-7 p.m. in the Skyline Cafeteria.  A sign-up link will come in the Oct. 18 A2Virtual+ Schoolmessenger.  This is a Tuesday and proctoring will also be held, as normal, in the Skyline Media Center.  There will be no proctoring on Nov. 5, due to elections.  A2Virtual+ does not send a representative to the building based conferences.
