Octoberfest!

Hi Everyone,
We had a great week!  We enjoyed some tastings from the garden in science today, made seed comparisons of what the entire fifth grade is growing in the garden for seed study, and we are even making garden benches for our school garden!  Check out the photos this weekend for all the cool things your children did.

Curriculum Night
Please sign up for parent-teacher conferences below.  I am eager to hear your thoughts and have an open dialogue about your child's learning. I will be holding one session in the evening and this will be the common parent-teacher conference night for Burns Park.  I will also hold some during the school day.  If you can make those times, please sign up.  If you absolutely can't make those times, I will offer you a session to meet with me at Argus Farm Stop on Packard Rd.  Thank you for understanding and your support.

Background Check
There is a new policy for anyone that volunteers in the school for any event or activity.  The safety of students, staff, volunteers, and guests in our buildings is a top priority of AAPS. The Board has developed policies to help ensure the safety of all who interact with students and staff. All AAPS employees and unsupervised volunteers are required by Board Policy, 7350 to undergo a criminal background check. The AAPS uses the I-Chat (Michigan State Police) system to perform background checks. All information gathered through the background check is confidential.  Please this form out if you plan to volunteer or come on a field trip this year.

Math
As a reminder, students will be taking their first math assessment on Thursday.  They will have a review packet to do which will help them to prepare for the test.  I will go over the unit assessment with each student on Friday for mastery. Students will see their results and track their progress in their data binders.  We will start unit 2 with a pretest and then go on to unit 2 the following week.

Math HW Support
I am hoping that parents will look over homework students get, especially with math homework. As a reminder, math homework is expected to be graded every night using the family letter at home AFTER homework is completed.  Any problems that are correct should be starred.  Every problem incorrect must be circled.  All incorrect problems should be reworked, the work must be shown either on the back or next to the problem and the correct answer should be written next to the incorrect problem.  That way I am able to see what the student did wrong. Remember to check the calendar on the blog to see what is due when!  The homework from Unit 1 will come home next week and should be in your child's homework folder.

Reading Practicum Students
We are welcoming two Eastern Michigan students to the classroom on Tuesdays and Wednesdays Ms. Marchand and Ms. Wylie.  They will be observing and participating in some reading assignments with students.  We are excited to have them in our class this fall!

Learning Objectives
Every day I post the "Learning Objectives" for the students to read.  We discuss our learning goals and learn how to reach them with each lesson. Students are encouraged and expected to read them every day. This is a great tool for them to take ownership of their learning and think about how to master these targets and why we need to.

OCTOBER SOCIAL LEARNING TARGETS
This month we are working on "Personal Development" learning targets.  Please talk to your child about focusing on some key objectives for the report card. We are also working on them at school.  These are important skills in and outside of our classroom environment.
  • I accept responsibility for my choices and behavior.
  • I demonstrate self-control.
  • I follow rules and directions.
  • I take care of and organize my materials and belongings.
  • I respond appropriately to conflict.
  • I show empathy, compassion, and respect.
Early Release Days
Please see the district website below for at a glance calendar dates including early release time for October 23.  Please make sure you have a plan for how your child is getting home that day.

The U.S. Traditional Model of Division
The idea of multiplication and division sometimes gives students a difficult time. I have posted a video for you to review with your child this weekend for the unit 1 test.  After you watch the video, students can practice this concept on the website.  Khan Academy offers practice and lots of excellent visual videos to help students learn.  Please check to see whether your student can do multi-digit multiplication and division and understands place value when doing it.  You will know what your child is struggling with when you check math homework daily with them. Student learning is a cooperative process and parent support is needed and deeply appreciated! :0)

The U.S. Traditional Model of Multiplication is something students should know how to do comfortably.  If they don't please make sure to review this with them.

Multiplying: 2 digit numbers: The trick here to remember your place value as you multiply and then add the numbers. We'll demonstrate and make it perfectly clear!

Model of Division is something students will be doing a lot of in fifth grade.  Please go over division problems carefully with your child to help them feel less anxious about it.  Being proactive is helpful for them to tackle tough problems.

Have a great weekend!
