First Week Success!

Hi Everyone,
We had a great first week!  I have absolutely loved getting to know your child and also getting to see my former students too. We are having fun, we are learning, and we are creating a compassionate learning environment. This week students took the Beginning of the Year math assessment and will start math on Monday, We also started the first 20 days of reading and did some creative writing in their writing journals!  We played a ton and enjoyed morning meeting activities.

Students also worked on recording and discussing their hopes and dreams for their classroom, teachers, self, and school.  They worked in small groups and discussed their ideas.  We gathered those ideas on the board, found common themes and used the ideas to come up with a class mission!  I am so impressed with their thoughts and ideas.  They are very insightful and I know this is going to be a very special year filled with growth and wonder.

Our Class Mission:

In Ms. Shah’s Learning Community, we pledge to be respectful, helpful, kind, and responsible.  Our class will actively listen.  We will do our best work and follow school expectations.  Our class will do our best to keep the school & earth clean and safe.  We will HAVE FUN!!! :O)

Garden Harvest
Our class went out to the garden this morning and harvested veggies for the entire school to taste at lunch!  We had so much fun harvesting squash, kale, Swiss chard, tomatoes, scallions, and flowers.  What a great job they did!

Ms. Rubin - Our Student Intern
A letter is coming home today in your child's backpack about our student intern.  PLEASE READ.  There are lots of things that Ms. Rubin is required to do so please take a look.  If you don't contact us, we will assume you are supportive of her work and encourage her to participate in what she needs.  If you have any questions, please let us know!

Please take a look every day in your child's folder for homework or notes that come home.  It is important that students empty this every day.  Thanks!

Bus Buddies
We have teamed up with the kindergarten classes and are helping them every day to get them to where they need to go.  The fifth-grade students have been SUPER buddies and have been so amazing to their bus buddies this week.  All kindergarten students have gotten to where they need to go and with so much care and support.  Thank you, fifth graders, in Ms. Shah's class for being amazing leaders!

Curriculum Rotations
We are starting our team teaching efforts next week.  Students will be rotating from class to class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  They will see all of the fifth-grade teachers for curriculum content.  Mr. Cramer will be teaching Social Studies.  Ms. Kreger will be teaching a science unit and economics.  Mrs. Pryce will be teaching a science unit and health.  I will be teaching two science units this year.  This model will get your student ready for middle school.  The rest of the time, they will be learning in my classroom.  For more details, come to curriculum night!
Room Parents
We are looking for awesome room parents this year!  If you want to part of our awesome team, please consider helping out this year.  Duties include hanging out with yours truly and planning some awesome events!  This is an awesome responsibility and really so much fun.  If you are interested, please email me!  Thank you!!

Writing Homework - DUE MONDAY!
Your child received homework on Wednesday.  They are to decorate their writer's notebook with family pictures, stickers, ticket stubs, and cover with the contact paper I provided. There is a video at the end of this post that shows how to cover the notebook.  Here is the link as well. https://youtu.be/e7xBSGUs3f4

NWEA Assessments
In the morning on Friday, September 13 and Friday, September 20 students will be taking the NWEA Math and Reading Assessments for the fall. The dates are marked on the blog calendar too and you can always check there for events and important dates!

Everyday Math
Inside your child's home folder, you will find their login and password information to access the online ConnectED website for Everyday Math.  There you will find printable math links (in case your child forgets their homework at school), family letters, online games, and all kinds of other resources for your child to explore.  I will show you in detail how to use it on curriculum night.

Curriculum Night - Save the Date!
I am looking forward to meeting parents on Tuesday, September 17.  I will be sharing what your child will be learning this year along with some other important classroom information.  I hope to see you there!

Donation Wish List
As a reminder, I have a classroom donation wish list page.  If you are interested in purchasing things for the classroom to help out, please visit that page.  We are in need of green spray (nonchemical and plant-based) and paper towel is very helpful too.  Please consider sending those items in too.  Please take a look at the Amazon wish list I have created to get a sense of what is needed.  It changes throughout the year too.  When you purchase it will automatically send the items right to our school.  Thank you for your support!

Notes from Home
If your child is going home with another child on the bus or for a playdate at any point this year, please write a note with the date giving permission for your child to go home with another and sign.  If they are going on a bus with another child, the office has to sign the note as well.

Book Orders
Book order forms will come home from time to time and all you need to do is go to the book order page on this blog and follow the directions.  Everything is done online so please do not send any money in.  Once a book order is placed using a credit card, I will get a notification.  Book orders will come directly to the school and I will hand them off to your child.  It's that easy!  If you would like to order please do so by following the directions on the "Scholastic Book Order" page of this blog.  Students know how to access this page so if you aren't sure how to do it, please ask them.  The class code is also located inside your child's folders and it is also located on the "Scholastic Book Order" blog page.  The more books families purchase the more points we get and the more free books I can order and place in our classroom library.  Place your book orders today! :0)

Donation Thank You!
